5000 series? 5600 series?

Everyone who loves the square G-SHOCK, certainly came.

When you start to take an interested in the square G-SHOCK, you may come across the words “5000 series” and “5600 series” .

In this article, I would like to write briefly about the difference between the 5000 series and the 5600 series.

Actually, this way of dividing has the meaning of “two types”. I would like to write about that in an easy-to-understand.

The model GMW-B5000D is the representative and recommended model of the 5000 series.

The representative model of the 5600 series is, of course, the DW-5600E.

5000 series / 5600 series has two meanings

This division has the meaning of “two types” .

First of all, if you do not understand what it means, you will not be able to understand the story.

The first meaning is the difference between “5000” and “5600” as “model number”.

This is relatively easy to understand because you can tell that the actual model number contains “5000” or “5600”.

The second meaning is the difference between “5000 series” and “5600 series” as “design” .

This refers to the dial design of the watch itself. It’s easy to tell if you look at it, but it refers to the design of 5000 systems and the design of 5600 systems.

Therefore, there is also a G-SHOCK with a “5000 series design even if the model number contains 5600” .
(In this case, the model number is 5600 series and the design is 5000 series. If you don’t understand that there are two meanings.)

Characteristices of “5000 series”

As a feature, it is generally,

• Made in Japan ( indicate MADE IN JAPAN)
• The back cover is a screw back (a method of twisting and tightening the back cover.)

This is the main characteristic and is often used for “luxury models” . (There are exceptions.)

Characteristices of 5600 series

The 5600 was originally made in Japan, but the current usage is

• Made in overseas(not Made in Japan)
• The back cover is a panel back (the flat back cover is fastened with four screws)

It is often used for “popular version” models due to such characteristices .

The panel back is not only a bad thing, but also has the characteristics of being “light and thin”, and for me, “this is recommended in terms of practicality”.

Second meaning 5000 series / 5600 series as “design”

Secondly, let’s look at the difference between 5000 and 5600 as “design”.

What is the 5000 series design?

The 5000 series refers to a model based on the design of the first DW-5000C that came out, which is the origin of G-SHOCK .

This is the first G-SHOCK, DW-5000C.

It’s a very cool design even now.

The system of this design is GW-M5610U.

This is the best example of “the model number is 5600 series, but the design is 5000 series” .

It’s very similar. It’s the same up to “red frame” . However, there is no “brick pattern inside the red frame”, and there is a net-like non-slip pattern on the outside of the red frame.

In this way, there is a difference in design even with the 5000 series. And this difference is also a point to enjoy.

There to, the GW-M5610U’s “bezel (the part where the white letters PROTECTION and G-SHOCK are written) has a step ” is the type used in the 5600 series.  The DW-5000C has no step on the bezel. This is also interesting.

By the way, this is a panel back instead of a screw back.

As a feeling, it will be a model called “the dial is 5000 series, and the others are 5600 series”.

The following is the GMW-5000D. This is also a 5000 series design.

This design is based on the DW-5600, which is also sophisticated and very popular .

I also love the 5600 series design.

First of all, the representative one is the introduction of DW-5600E.

Next is the overseas version of DW-5600E-1V. The contents are the same, only the design is slightly different.

The difference in design from the “5000 series” is

• “SHOCK RESIST” mark is placed at the bottom center (5000 series is on the upper left)
• “CASIO” logo is placed on the center
• There is no frame at the position of the red frame
• “Thin white border” around the dial, “thick white border” on the outermost side
• There are characters in the functions introductions are in symmetrical position.

And so on.

(Some models that are not used, the bezel has a step. The white letters “PROTECTION” and “G-SHOCK” on the bezel are slightly stepped, making it more difficult to scratch.)

It’s very similar. Up to this point, the colors are very similar.

Next is the radio clock + solar GW-S5600U-1.

This is also a 5600 series as a design. It will be a different kind of G-SHOCK made of carbon fiber material.

Next up is the GW-B5600HR-1.

There are also “CASIO” and “SHOCK RESIST” in the center, so it’s a 5600 series design.

However, the position of the frame is not on the outside but on the inside. And it feels like 5000 series rather than 5600 series. It’s really interesting to compare around that.

Extra: Square G-SHOCK that is not classified as 5000/5600

There is also a square G-SHOCK that is hard to say either series.

For example, DW-5600BB.

In the case of this model, there is no word “SHOCK RESIST” in the first place, and there is no mark.

In this case, the model number DW-5600BB seems to be a hint.

• Equivalent to DW-5600E in function according to the model number (without battery-powered radio syncing and tough solar)
• It is hard to say that the design is 5000 series or 5600 series.
• There is no doubt that it is a “square G-SHOCK”.

It can be said that “the model number and function are 5600 series”.

And “the design is not 5000/5600 series” ,however “square G-SHOCK color variations”.
