The GM-2110D G-SHOCK Fans Have Been Waiting For: A Metal Bracelet and Day-of-the-Week Display

The model G-SHOCK fans have been waiting for is here!

The hugely popular 2100 series, a sibling of the square G-SHOCK, finally gets the metal bracelet fans have been hoping for.

    • A metal-bracelet version joins the 2100 series, the most popular analog G-SHOCK family!
    • At first glance, it looks like a new color version of the GM-2100 released in 2022, but the bracelet's polished detailing has changed.
    • The day-of-the-week display seen on the original GA-2100 is back! That's great to see.
    • The downside is that it runs on a conventional battery.
    • I would really love to see this design with solar power and radio-controlled timekeeping.

    Above All, It Looks Fantastic!

    This is the GM-2110D.

Above all, it looks fantastic. It's the kind of watch you could fall in love with at first sight.

The watch in this photo is the orange GM-2110D-4A.

A Quick Recap: The 2100 Series Grew Out of the Square G-SHOCK

Let's revisit why I cover the 2100 series on this site.

As I explained in detail in my earlier GA-2100 article, the popular 2100 series is very much a sibling of the square G-SHOCK—the 5000 and 5600 series.

Take a look at CASIO's page dedicated to the GA-2100.

The 5000 and 2100 series share the same strap design, and the bezel design carries over as well.

    From CASIO's website

CASIO calls it an "octagonal bezel."

Now that you mention it, it really is an octagon. Maybe I should rename this site from "A Site for Square G-SHOCK Fans" to "A Site for Octagonal G-SHOCK Fans"!

Next, notice the ridged sections around the bezel that they share.

    From CASIO's website

Those ridged sections of the bezel are another shared detail.

In other words, CASIO itself is telling us that the GA-2100 is a sibling of the square G-SHOCK.

    From CASIO's website

Since CASIO says it based the design on the square G-SHOCK, the GA-2100 counts as a square G-SHOCK in my book.

How the Different 2100 Series Models Compare

The 2100 series has been hugely popular, and many variations have been released over the years.

First came the original GA-2100, released in August 2019. (Read the article.)

Next came the GM-2100, with only the band changed to metal, released in July 2021. (Read the article.)

Next was the GA-B2100, which added Bluetooth connectivity, released in April 2022.

There was an important design change here: the day-of-the-week indication on the small subdial on the left was removed and replaced with a battery-level indicator.

Next came the GM-B2100D with a metal bracelet, released in August 2022. (Read the article.)

    GM-B2100D

Like the GW-B5000D, a pinnacle of the 5000 series, this is a model that can be considered one of the pinnacles of G-SHOCK.

The Day-of-the-Week Display Is Back! That's Great, But…

Look closely and you'll see that the day-of-the-week display has finally returned to the 2100 family.

    I'm glad to see it.

With the Bluetooth-equipped GA-B2100 and GM-B2100, you can no longer see the day of the week and the date at the same time. You could call it a downside of adding features without changing the overall design.

Here is the dial on the GA-2100 and GM-2100.

    The GA-2100 dial

It shows the days of the week as SU, M, T, W, T, F, and S.

Here is the dial on the GA-B2100 and GM-B2100.

    The GA-B2100 dial

There is no day-of-the-week indication here.
Instead, it has been replaced with function indicators such as L, M, and H for the battery level.

That was the solution needed to fit everything into the 2100's existing design, but it has made the watch a little less convenient to use.

So there was a reason the day-of-the-week display disappeared from the 2100 family:
it made room for the solar-powered battery's charge-level indicator.

Then why has the day-of-the-week display returned on the newly released GM-2110D…?

That's right: the new GM-2110D does not have solar power or radio-controlled timekeeping!

It runs on a conventional battery, and the official website lists a battery life of 3 years.
In a sense, its features are a step backward from the GM-B2100.

Personally, I loved the day-of-the-week display when the GA-2100 first arrived.

The GA-2100 I bought at the time

When the GM-B2100 was released, I was very disappointed to see that display disappear.

Above all, it gives up one of the best things about G-SHOCK:
being able to see the time, date, and day of the week all at a glance.

One of the best things about G-SHOCK: the time, date, and day of the week are all visible at a glance!

I believe a G-SHOCK needs to be a practical wristwatch, not just a good-looking one.

On the GM-B5600D, the battery level is displayed only in the app.

Bluetooth, solar power, and radio-controlled timekeeping, but no battery-level display

I'm very happy that the GM-2110D has brought the day-of-the-week display back to the 2100 series.

I hope this leads to a 2100 series model that keeps the day-of-the-week display while letting you check the battery level and other information in the app.

The GMC-B2100 has also been released to address the challenge of displaying both the day of the week and the battery level.
Its design differs a little from the familiar 2100 series, but perhaps this was the only workable compromise.
You could call it the top of the 2100 family.

There Are Design Changes Compared With the GM-B2100D, Too

There are also design changes compared with the GM-2100D, which likewise has a metal bracelet.

Specifically, the polished details—the two circular marks—have been removed from the bracelet.

    Here is the existing GM-B2100D.

And here is the newly released GM-2110D.

Doesn't the bracelet area look a little cleaner?

The two circular marks, "◯ ◯," that were on the bracelet are gone.

↑ The areas highlighted in red here have been removed.

This looks cleaner and may suit the 2100 series' metal bracelet better.

A Metal-Bracelet 2100 Series Model That Keeps the Day Display!

This time, I introduced the GM-2110D.

It's a notable model in the G-SHOCK 2100 series: a metal bracelet paired with a dial that keeps the day-of-the-week display.

If you love the 2100 series' design, consider picking one up. I recommend it.
